I'm all giddy watching this. I can't get enough of steam locomotives, I blame my grandma fo sitting me in front of Thomas and Friends when I was little.

It's good to see the running gear operational, but it doesn't look like it's under steam. I'm assuming it's going to their steam shop in Cheyenne?

EDIT: Now I see...the boiler jacket is still off (seen in close-ups near the 2:32 mark)

My mom works for GATX, one of the leading railcar manufacturers and lessors. She was at their Colton, CA shop and saw UP moving this beast right by their shop.

I'm going to assume it's in good structural shape, but you're right, it will need a complete re-work. Given UP's history with steam, they will most likely convert this over to an oil burner like they did with the 3985. When the 3985 was first restored as a coal burner, they set off a lot of brush fires out west when out on excursions.

Assuming they go the oil burner route, the firebox and boiler will be very differently built compared to a coal burner. The tender will also have to be re-built to carry oil instead of coal.

I see you're from the St. Louis area. Have you seen the Big Boy at the Museum of Transport?

Yup been there. Its in sad shape honestly.....Also it will be an oil burner. I remember seing some of the videos about it. I remember reading about 4005 after its infamous wreck it was converted to oil burner but it failed maybe they will get it right this time.

I'm sure they learned their lesson when they converted the 3985 over. I can't wait to see it under steam.

I know! It will be amazing. I want to get a compilation of all the clips of the move home and put the song I'm coming home behind it.

I flew into Colton the day they moved it. Such disappoint. I would have been right there :( Oh well, I got to see a homeless man asleep on a refrigerated car. He was quite pissed when we removed him.

And the crossheads are removed, so the cylinders aren't working.
